A replacement for the fitness trail in Offenbach is planned

In its most recent meeting, the city council of Offenbach gave the go-ahead for the construction of a new exercise course in the green ring. If the city councilors also approve the principle decision of the city council in their September meeting, the planning can be deepened by the office for urban planning, traffic and construction management.

The reason for the project is, among other things, the dismantling of the popular fitness trail in the forest area “Auf der Rosenhöhe”. Due to the extreme climatic conditions in recent years, the old, formative beech trees in particular have died and are no longer allowed to be removed due to the inclusion of the forest in a “core zone of nature conservation”. At the instigation of the forest administration, the no longer safe to use fitness trail had to be dismantled to the regret of many users. A replacement in the forest was discarded due to the lack of stability of the trees. Instead, an attractive and centrally located movement system is to be built in Offenbach’s green ring – about one kilometer from the previous location in the section between Weidigweg and Senefelder Straße.

“With the new exercise course, we are not only creating a simple replacement for the previous system, but are also making the offer even more attractive and combining it with climate and species protection measures for the city of Offenbach,” said Paul-Gerhard Weiß, Head of Construction and Planning. “The facility is being built close to home and enables exercise activities for people from 14 years of age to old age,” Weiß continues. “Due to the planned location in the green ring at an intersection of two footpaths and cycle paths, the new movement system is easier to reach for many more people than the previous one. The catchment area includes the districts of Lauterborn, Rosenhöhe and Carl-Ulrich-Siedlung. “

The sports equipment, which is protected from vandalism, is embedded in the existing green area. Equipment for strength and mobility (calisthenics) as well as for coordination, endurance and relaxation are provided. Signs with instructions help you try out different exercises. For a longer stay, seating and waste bins are available. The sporty journey is encouraged by setting up bicycle hangers. Flowering bushes, trees providing shade and a flower meadow are also intended to increase the biodiversity in the green ring. Climate protection is also taken into account: water-permeable soil materials are used so that rainwater can seep away on site. In addition, other climate-adapted trees are being planted.

The Offenbacher Grünring is a scenic connecting element and can be reached directly from large parts of the city. It offers Offenbach residents numerous areas for leisure and recreational activities and is therefore particularly suitable for leisure facilities such as the exercise course. The area has a size of around 550 square meters. There is currently a meadow and several deciduous trees that provide shade in summer. A football field is adjacent to the west. The previous plans envisage the start of construction in spring 2022. The facility should be ready for use by summer 2022 at the latest. The costs amount to around 143,000 euros and two-thirds of the funding from the “Zukunft Stadtgrün” funding pool will be borne by the federal government and the state of Hesse.
