In April, a 25-year-old American survived an infection with coronavirus. He only experiences mild symptoms and is recovering. But a few weeks later, he has to go to the emergency room. A test watch: He contracted the pathogen again.
Scientists have proven a new corona infection in a patient who has long recovered in the United States, according to a study. This shows that immunity after infection is not absolute and that multiple infections are possible, according to the study. In addition, the patient’s second illness was more severe than the first. However, it is not clear to what extent general conclusions can be drawn from this.
The researchers’ study led by Richard Tillett of the University of Nevada has been submitted to “The Lancet” magazine, but has not yet been independently verified and published. The case appears to be the first documented double infection in the United States. More recently, researchers from Hong Kong, Belgium and the Netherlands have reported documented cases of new infections.
The World Health Organization (WHO) assumes that there are now nearly 25 million coronavirus infections worldwide that these are isolated cases. The duration of immunity after infection and the relationship between its duration and the severity of the course of the disease are still uncertain eight months after the onset of the pandemic.
The case in the US state of Nevada is a 25-year-old patient who tested positive for the pathogen Sars-CoV-2 for the first time in mid-April. The person had symptoms of a cold and diarrhea. After the patient recovered, two coronavirus tests were negative in May.
“It could be a rare case”
However, on May 31, the patient sought medical help for symptoms such as fever, headache, and cough. After a chest x-ray, the person was released. Five days later, the patient was taken to the emergency room and had to be ventilated.
A corona test at the beginning of June was again positive. Genetic testing showed that the first and second infections were different variants of Sars-CoV-2, the researchers explained. This speaks against a flare-up of the first infection.
The researchers made it clear that general conclusions could not necessarily be drawn from the individual case. “It could be a rare event,” they wrote in the article filed Thursday. So far, researchers have assumed that a corona infection that has passed through will at least temporarily provide protection against a new infection.
