a “red list” announced, information on getting tested

Jean Castex announced the generalization of diagnostic tests for Covid-19 on arrival at airports. Also, those entering French territory, coming from 16 countries “where viral circulation is particularly strong”, must be able to present negative tests at controls.

[Mis à jour le 24 juillet 2020 à 17h55] This Friday, Jean Castex announced compulsory tests for travelers coming from “16 countries in the world where viral circulation is particularly strong”, in particular the United States, Algeria and Brazil. The individuals concerned must be able to present “a test certifying that they are not carriers of the virus”. However, the Prime Minister clarified: “We know that in a number of these countries, there is no screening strategy and that access to tests is difficult, as a result of which we decided to generalize the tests on arrival. “Positive cases will be placed in fourteen. Here is the list of countries concerned: United States, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Panama, South Africa, Kuwait, Qatar, Israel, Brazil, Peru, Serbia, Algeria, Turkey, Madagascar , India and Oman.

In France, according to Statista estimates, 91.3 tests are performed daily for each new confirmed Covid-19 case. By way of comparison, 218.2 tests are carried out in Italy and 168.5 in the United Kingdom.

Since the deconfinement, last May, France has a weekly capacity of 700,000 diagnostic tests for Covid-19. Are affected by these screenings:

  • Individuals who exhibit symptoms (breathing difficulties, fever, cough, unusual fatigue, headache, body aches, sore throat, loss of taste or smell). The latter must present a prescription issued by a general practitioner or on call.
  • People identified as “contacts”. In this case, the people concerned are contacted by the Health Insurance services, who tell them when to perform the test (immediately in the event of cohabitation with the patient or after seven days in other situations). During screening, no medical prescription is necessary.
  • Certain audiences as part of specific screening campaigns. These targeted test campaigns are intended for vulnerable people, residents of collective accommodation structures and staff working in these structures in the event of a first confirmed case within the structure, areas identified as vulnerable because of their density or distance from access to care.
  • Individuals eligible for a “large scale” testing campaign coordinated by the ARS. To do this, simply present a Health Insurance voucher. Olivier Véran explained in The world that it is “to identify any dormant clusters, that is to say invisible foci of asymptomatic people.”

Patients hospitalized or showing signs of severity are tested in hospital facilities. For the others, samples are taken in town laboratories, drives, at home if necessary or in the ARS sampling sites. Moreover, by a decree of July 11, 2020, medical laboratory assistants, doctors and pharmacists are authorized to perform serological tests. Find the screening centers near your home on the website sante.fr or on the Essence & Co application.

Virological tests (PCR) are used to determine if a person is a carrier of Covid-19 at the time of screening. The test is performed by laboratory assistants, nurses, doctors using a nasal or salivary sample.

Serological tests are used to find out if a person has developed an immune reaction after coming into contact with the virus. These tests are performed using traditional blood tests or rapid collection kits. The list of devices deemed “reliable” is available on the website of Ministry of Health. They are reimbursed by social security when they fall within the framework of the indications defined by the High Authority of Health.
