The researchers noted that other studies have shown that semen quality is declining over time.
A 2022 review found that the average sperm count among non-infertile participants fell by 51% between 1973 and 2018, from 101.2 million to 49 million per milliliter of semen. This is still within the “normal” range for the World Health Organization.
Low sperm
There is a relationship between low sperm concentration and other factors related to male health as well, such as an increased risk of some types of cancer. However, finding two things to be linked does not prove that one is responsible for or a result of the other, and we still don’t know the mechanism behind the effects.
There are other important factors that can affect fertility over time, as air pollution has been linked to decreased sperm production in both humans and animals in several previous studies.
