Next night, we will have to look up to the sky with the passage of the Earth in a swarm of shooting stars. So you will understand. Tonight, a rain of shooting stars can be observed in Martinique, from midnight until daybreak. These are the Perseids. You will need to have your eyes turned to the north to see them properly and above all to be patient.
The Perseid observation period runs from July 17 to August 24. In 2020 the peak will take place on August 12. It will be necessary to look up during the night of the 11th to the 12th, but also the following days when the Moon will be less disturbing. Specialists predict a maximum of 100 to 110 meteors per hour, at the time of the peak, under optimum observation conditions. These will not be reunited on the 12th, because of the presence of the Moon illuminated at 44%. Swarms are huge clouds over a million km long that contain billions of particles. The dust is spaced between them from a few tens to a few hundred kilometers.
Where did the Perseids come from?
According to Tropical Sky, the Perseids come from comet 109P / Swift-Tuttle which describes its orbit around the Sun in 133 years and whose last passage near the Earth took place in December 1992 (next passage in July 2126). It was Schiaparelli (1835 – 1910), Italian astronomer and politician who made the connection between the Perseids and the comet.
