A question of the tests: Trump downplayed infection numbers

The United States is far from defeating the corona pandemic, and the number of cases has increased in many states in recent weeks. According to President Trump, this has nothing to do with the actual infection process.

US President Donald Trump has that again dramatically increasing number of coronavirus infections in the USA downplayed. “If we didn’t test, we wouldn’t have any cases,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News. The United States has so far tested around 30 million people for the virus, more than any other country in the world. Trump’s assessment is the result of the high number of detected infections in the United States.

Most renowned experts reject Trump’s statement that the increase in infections is primarily due to an increase in tests. They are primarily responsible for Trump’s easing of corona restrictions in the states.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the United States has recently recorded around 35,000 new infections a day – almost as many as at the height of the crisis in April. After that, the number had decreased before rocketing again that month. The center of the infection was initially on the east coast and in California, but now the virus is spreading. Around half of the U.S. states have seen an increase in cases.

Trump still advocates a quick reopening of the economy. He also wants to return to normal as quickly as possible, also with a view to the November election. According to him, the corona virus is gradually disappearing from the United States. The data doesn’t support that. Texas Governor Greg Abbott only announced Thursday that steps to reopen the state would be suspended due to the dramatically increasing number of cases. Abbott, like Trump, belongs to the Republican Party.
