A Quebecer shines at America’s Got Talent

A Quebecer slipped among the participants of the famous television contest America’s Got Talent. Violin in hand, composer and performer Gabriella Laberge climbed the steps of the iconic stage last April, in the greatest secrecy. The day after the broadcast of his hearing – which sparked the buzz and a standing ovation from the judges – she told us about her time behind the scenes of Hollywood’s biggest television set.

Gabriella Laberge’s vacation to a coastal British Columbia island had to be restful. A romantic journey, without phone or social networks. But the plans quickly changed.

“Last week, I learned that my hearing was going to be broadcast tonight. Had I known, I would have planned something! Gabriella laughs from across the screen.

The audition in question is the one she had earlier this year on the reality show America’s Got Talent, entering its 16th season. In 2018, a talent hunter from the American competition contacted the singer from Saint-Basile. At the time, she was still riding the wave The Voice: the most beautiful voice, which led her to the quarterfinals of the 5th season of the French telecrochet – the violin cover of The Scientist, Coldplay, which went viral, it was her.

“At that time, I was releasing my second album, I was on tour. It wasn’t something that was in my head, ”Gabriella recalls. A year later, we relaunched it. This time, she said yes, but the pandemic put the filming of the season on hold. In the meantime, she also took part in the competition Destination Eurovision, which selects the representative of France in the great European song competition.

Unanimity

“There were so many pitfalls that I couldn’t believe it anymore,” recalls the artist. Three and a half years later, she finally made it to the stage of the Pasadena Civic Auditorium (“the same scene where Michael Jackson did his first moonwalk!”), Where her interpretation of Goodbye My Lover, by James Blunt, aroused unanimity among the judges, which Simon Cowell aptly summed up: “America deserves to know you. ”

On YouTube, the trailer for his audition has already been watched 1.3 million times. On Facebook, 1.2 million more clicks.

This is completely crazy ! You don’t expect that. Seems like after all this long process, I got on stage with no expectations. With a lightness, even. I was just extremely grateful to have this privilege.

Note that another Quebecker has also made her way there. This is Alexandra Côté, dog trainer from Thetford, who won over the judges with the acrobatic performance of her dogs.

120 seconds

America’s Got Talent, it’s months and months of preparation for a 120-second performance. Nothing is therefore left to chance. In preparation for D-Day, Gabriella trained with a violinist from the Orchester symphonique de Montréal and hired a coach of voice. She tested dozens and dozens of songs.

Landed in Hollywood last April, she then spent a week in quarantine in a hotel, where she trained “like a racehorse”. Prohibition to leave his room, except for the tip of his nose.

I stuck my head out into the hall and heard the other participants singing.

After two more days of rehearsal, it was time to take the stage. Funny fact: due to sanitary measures, the room was empty. Applause and encouragement from the audience was added to the cut. “And the judges, they were so far away from me that I couldn’t see them! ”

That didn’t stop her from offering a performance that lived up to her ambitions – and receiving a pass for the next round. Even if, in the end, it doesn’t matter much to him. “The hearing, that’s what was important. This is my business card. The rest of the competition, the competition, that’s not what matters to me, ”she said.

What matters is finishing his third album. And above all, to take your time to do it well.

“I don’t want to make the mistake of rushing to release music just to have some momentum anymore. I don’t want to be defined by the buzz. I want a long career, I want to perform my whole life, and to achieve that I have a lot more to accomplish than this show. ”
