Kaspersky published the results of an interesting research, during which fifteen thousand people asked about practices in permitting specific powers to mobile applications. At a time when online communication was (and still is) at the forefront, research has focused on how much people are puzzled by the fact that the application wants them to access the camera and microphone. It turned out that almost a quarter of users grant this permission completely recklessly. Older users are a little more careful and vigilant.
According to Kaspersky, it is understandable that with technologies that help manage the current situation in the work, social and entertainment spheres, people were willing to allow applications access to the microphone and camera. Various tools offered rapid acquisition of digital skills and promised to make life easier in lockdown conditions. According to the survey, this led to the fact that 27% of people aged 25 to 34 recklessly awarded all applications allow the required access. This was less common in older demographic groups. A total of 38% of respondents over the age of 55 stated that such access to applications and services they never allow it.
For applications such as WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams, Skype or Meet, of course, there is not much cause for concern from this point of view. However, the statistics found are at the same time a warning finger that habits and trust of usersthey are not completely well set up. According to Kaspersky, research examining users’ responses to the desired approach to the camera and microphone points to the need to strike a balance between caution and comfort. And also on the growing effort of people to feel safe in today’s digital worldwithout losing modern possibilities. Yes, almost a quarter of people grant these rights recklessly, but the trend is positive.
It’s getting better. People control permissions more
“Many people do not yet know the principles of security when using a webcam and are not familiar with the basic elements of cyber security. However, we are seeing a strong positive trend of increasing awareness of the need for online security and risks associated with potential threats. It leads to more proactive user behavior. They take precautionary measures and check the permissions of individual applications before allowing them access to the camera and microphone. We also expect that growing interest in cyber security it will also support companies by organizing relevant training for their employees. It is in their interest because audio and video devices are now widely used for work from home, ”says Marina Titova, Kaspersky’s Head of Consumer Product Marketing.
