Part of the city of New Rochelle, north of New York, was placed in quarantine on Tuesday in the hope of stemming the spread of the new coronavirus there.
Starting March 12, all schools and buildings where large numbers of people can gather will be closed until March 25, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced during a press conference in Albany.
Public buildings within the quarantine area, which stretches approximately 1 mile (1.6 km), will also be closed and cleaned.
“It is a serious measure, but we are talking about the biggest home [de COVID-19] in the country. It is a question of life and death ”, pleaded the governor.
As of Tuesday, New York State had 173 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 108 in Westchester County, where we are in New Rochelle. Thirty-six cases have also been identified in New York City.
