Quito. A prosecutor and a police officer in charge of his custody died on Friday in an armed attack in the Ecuadorian port of Manta (southwest), where drug trafficking gangs with links to international cartels operate, the prosecutor’s office reported.
“We regret to report the death of prosecutor Marcelo Vásconez and his guard during an armed attack,” indicated the accusing entity in its X account.
The Police indicated that agent Marco Moreno, who was acting as Vásconez’s bodyguard, died in the attack.
“Our specialized units are deployed in order to find those responsible for this unfortunate event,” added the police institution.
Vásconez and Moreno were “ambushed by several individuals carrying long weapons and traveling in a vehicle,” according to the police.
The crimes occurred outside the Prosecutor’s Office building in Manta, the main fishing port in Ecuador and one of those used by drug traffickers for their drug shipments to the United States and Europe.
A burned vehicle in which the hitmen were apparently traveling was found near the scene, according to the digital newspaper Primicias.
Vásconez, 45, worked as a prosecutor in the Transnational and International Organized Crime area, according to the newspaper.
Among the cases that were under his responsibility are the isolated murders of a prosecutor and the mayor of Manteño Agustín Intriago, the latter in July 2023, as well as the discovery of a ton of cocaine at the Ecuadorian Air Force (FAE) base. ) on the same port.
