The Starch and Sugar Reduced Diet (SSRD)presents itself as an effective and simpler alternative to the famous low-FODMA dietP to relieve irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). According to a study from Lund University in Sweden, this diet offers similar results in easing IBS symptoms, while promoting weight loss and reducing sugar cravings.

The study, published in the journal Nutrientsfollowed 155 participants suffering from IBS, randomly distributed between two diets: the SSRD diet and the low FODMAP diet. Over four weeks, participants saw a reduction in symptoms of around 75 to 80% in both groups. However, the SSRD group saw additional results, including greater weight loss and reduced sugar cravings.

In contrast, SSRD is more accessible, allowing people to eat a variety of foods while simply reducing certain foods high in starch and sugar.

SSRD works by limiting the amount of fermentable carbohydrates in the intestines, which reduces bloating, pain and digestive upset. Additionally, associated weight loss may also decrease IBS symptoms. Indeed, adipose tissue produces inflammatory substances, and its reduction would alleviate the chronic inflammation often present in patients with IBS.

SSRD also has the benefit of reducing sugar cravings, by limiting calories from simple carbohydrates which provide less satiety. Unlike sugars, healthy fats contained in the diet increase the feeling of satiety, thus contributing to the reduction of calorie intake.
