A project from the University of Malaga wins the III Research Contest of the FOESSA Foundation

The FOESSA Foundation (Promotion of Social Studies and Applied Sociology), a private and non-profit entity, has just awarded the third edition of the 2022 Social Projects Research Contest. The selected work belongs to a large team from the Faculty of Sciences of Education of the University of Malaga and is entitled “Looking together to see beyond: metaphors of resilience, empowerment and social inclusion”.

The Jury has especially valued “the capacity of this research to open up new ways of approaching the world of severe social exclusion, to understand it better and to know how to act in a more appropriate way”. The project will be developed over 12 months in the Malaga neighborhood of Los Asperones, an isolated neighborhood in the city that concentrates a good number of families in a situation of social exclusion. This project was chosen from a total of 17 proposals submitted.

Christopher Ruiz Roman, coordinator of the research and tenured professor in the Department of Theory and History of Education explains that the objective of this project is “to broaden and share the meaning and meaning of social exclusion.” “The figurative language of the metaphor allows us to recognize experiences and people and with it share and open perspectives on social reality. With the illustrative language of metaphors, we not only expand the meaning of the experience, but we share the meaning and what is felt, ”he points out. Ruiz Román will carry out this study together with ten other researchers, including professors Jesus Juarez Perez-Cea y Lorena Molina Cuesta (in the image).

Knowledge of social reality

The FOESSA Foundation’s Research Contest in Social Projects aims to contribute, through financing, to the deepening and knowledge of the Spanish social reality. In line with this objective, the research projects that are presented to the jury focus their attention especially on the new exclusive factors and on the new social processes that can crystallize in new dynamics that generate social exclusion.

For this reason, the proposals must deal with the themes included in the four fundamental axes that synthesize the lines of research of the FOESSA Foundation: social structure and inequality; agents and social actors; international dimension of development and global processes; and metaphors that generate social model.

The Prize has a financial endowment of 15,000 euros in order to fully or partially develop the project, until it becomes a research report. This amount includes all the expenses necessary to carry out the investigation.

The FOESSA Foundation was created by Cáritas Española in 1965 and has among its main purposes “to serve the general interests of society through applied research and the dissemination of social issues, the promotion and conduct of research studies related to the reality social, cultural and economic of Spain and other countries”.
