But Lu’s study warns that there is a hole just above the tropics that stays open all year.
“The tropics make up half the planet’s surface area and are home to about half the world’s population. The presence of the tropical ozone hole could cause great global concern. “Depletion of the ozone layer can lead to increased ground-level UV radiation, which can increase people’s risk of skin cancer and cataracts, as well as weaken human immune systems, reduce agricultural productivity and adversely affect ecosystems.”
