Can the power of words and a father’s love break through the cold stone walls and metal bars of a prison cell?
The prison in Burgas is one of the most heavily guarded. But behind the high stone walls, a father reads fairy tales on the phone to his children every night. Tales that he himself wrote. And even wins literary contests, reports Nova TV.
“My dear children, there was a time in the distant past, when wizards, good fairies, dragons and giants walked the earth – a kingdom that was so rich and beautiful that songs were sung about it throughout the land. But fierce wars began. The kingdom fell into ruin because people there knew how to love each other and not to fight. They were ruled by a beautiful princess, not a warrior king. She asked her sorcerer to awaken and summon the ominous dragon, which alone could have saved her kingdom from ruin. The war was over, but that was not the end. The price the princess had to pay was to marry the evil dragon”.
“The Princess and the Dragon” is a fairy tale with a lesson – that even in the most terrible beast lies the good. It’s a question of someone or something waking him up. The author of this tale is the prisoner Dimitar Dikov.
“The bad dragon is me, who, perhaps, having shed his last skin, has only good left in him,” says Dimitar.
He was sentenced to 3 years in prison for computer fraud. And in the cell he discovered an unsuspected talent, with which he won first place in the “Christmas Wishes” literary contest.
“I get a little more lost in thought, but I sit down and start putting it on paper. Then I turn them into a story that I can send to my children. The little one knows that dad is in the castle, and the big one knows that dad is a chef and cooks,” says Dimitar.
Until the summer of 2020, he lives a seemingly perfect life. He has a private business, but steps wrong with computer fraud.
“Everybody years ago wanted to be a bad boy, as it was fashionable. That’s what I decided too, but then I lost. I lost the most important thing – my freedom, my marriage and found solace in my children. Maybe when I was younger I accepted things and thought that way I would be more extroverted, with these trips I had to Dubai or wherever,” says Dikov.
So from Dubai he landed in the cell of the Burgas prison. He admits that he feels ashamed of his children.
“Every child should be proud of their father. And in this case, their father made a mistake,” he says.
“The day before the wedding, a wise woman came and advised the princess to put on 10 wedding dresses one on top of the other and ask the dragon, when she took off one dress, to take off a layer of her skin. She took off a dress, he a layer of his skin. Until finally a handsome prince appeared from below”.
“If we wait for change to come, it will never come. You have to do everything possible for her to come to you”, says Dikov.
He hopes to be released early in a few months. He immediately wants to meet his children. And he will continue to write so that fairy tales behind bars can find their way to freedom.
“To publish a few stories to send to inmates who don’t have the opportunity to hear their children. One such letter, one such story can be addressed to her on behalf of the father. Every parent thinks about their child,” he says.
