With Eddie Murphy, you never know what you’re going to fall into.
At the top of his basket, there is the classic ‘A Prince in New York’ signed by John Landis (‘An armchair for two’). His suite unfortunately goes down to the bottom of the basket, but then really at the bottom. Still in the shoes of Prince Akeem of the fictional kingdom of Zamunda, Murphy sets out in search of a crown prince, whom he will of course find in… New York!
Placement of serial products, scenario without any stakes, and supposedly progressive discourse on the access of women to the throne: the discomfort is palpable. A few good surprises are worth a look, like the clownish warlord played by Wesley Snipes, but a sketch in his glory would have been more than enough.
