The starting price was set by the Sotheby’s auction house at 16 million Swiss francs (392 million crowns), but experts believed that the precious stone could be auctioned for a total price of 21 to 33 million Swiss francs.

In the end, it remained at the lower end of the estimate. An unnamed bidder won the auction when it submitted a bid of just 21 million francs. Together with the fees, they have to pay 24.4 million Swiss francs (598.4 million crowns) for the diamond, which makes the Spirit of the Rose the most expensive pink diamond in the world.

The diamond got its name from the ballet The Spirit of the Rose by choreographer and dancer Vaclav Nižinský from 1911. It was cut from the largest piece of pink diamond ever found in Russia.
