The Plovdiv Court of Appeals upheld the life sentence of police officer Ventsislav Karadzhov, handed down by the Plovdiv District Court. He was found guilty of intentionally killing more than one person in the city of Plovdiv on May 15, 2016 – his mother and father, and the murder was committed intentionally, with extreme cruelty and selfish intent.
The Court of Appeal amended the sentence in its part regarding the application of Art. 59, para. 2 para. 1 of the Penal Code as a deduction from the sentence of life imprisonment imposed on the defendant Ventsislav Karadzhov, the time during which he was detained on 17.05.2016 for a period of 24 hours under the Law on the Ministry of Interior and from 04.06.2016 – with a measure of restraint “detention in custody “until the sentence enters into force.
The case was heard for the second time by the Plovdiv Court of Appeals after the Supreme Court of Cassation overturned the decision of the Plovdiv Court of Appeals and returned the case for retrial by another panel of the appellate court to eliminate procedural violations.
The decision of the Court of Appeal is not final. It is subject to appeal and protest before the Supreme Court of Cassation.
