A police officer was killed last night in the Swedish city of Gothenburg. This is the first murder in the last 14 years of a law enforcement officer in the Scandinavian country, which has recently been experiencing a serious problem with the shootings between criminal gangs, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.
The attacker has not been identified and no suspects have been arrested so far.
“We are determined to solve this case. It is too early to say whether the police were the target of the attack,” police chief Klaus Johansson told a news conference.
The attack took place when law enforcement officers patrolled a troubled neighborhood in Gothenburg. One of the policemen was hit by a bullet and later died in hospital. He was in his 30s and was recently assigned to the police.
The last time a police officer was killed while serving in Sweden was in 2007.
Sweden has been trying for several years to oppose criminal gangs, which often settle their accounts with shootings. In 2020, there were more than 360 cases of firearms use, killing 47 people and injuring 117. According to police, this is a record level of violence.
