The Quebecer, 12th favorite, will face a player from the qualifications at the bottom of the table. If the logic of the standings is respected in the first two rounds and the 21-year-old wins his two matches, he could find the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut or the unpredictable Australian Nick Kyrgios.
If Auger-Aliassime wants to advance to the quarter-finals in New York for the first time, he may also have to defeat fifth-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev.
At the top of the table, Denis Shapovalov will start his tournament against Argentina’s Federico Delbonis, 47th in the world.
The Ontarian (no 7) could then, in the third round, face Russian Karen Khachanov (no 18). In the quarterfinals, Shapovalov could have on his way the German Alexander Zverev, 4th in the ATP.
For his part, Vasek Pospisil will be the only Canadian to face a player better classified than him in the first round. His opponent will be the Italian Fabio Fognini, 32nd in the world.
Captain Frank Dancevic cheers on Vasek Pospisil during his match against Fabio Fognini.
Pospisil won his two duels against Fognini, the last in two rounds at the Davis Cup finals in Madrid in November 2019.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will begin his quest for a 21st major title against a qualified player. Daniil Medvedev, 2nd in the world, will face Frenchman Richard Gasquet, while Stefanos Tsitsipas (3rd) will face Scottish player Andy Murray, tournament champion in 2012.
Andreescu against Golubic
For her big comeback in Flushing Meadows, two years after her coronation on the Arthur-Ashe court, Bianca Andreescu will begin her journey against Viktorija Golubic, 47th in the WTA, from Switzerland.
It will be the first duel between the two players. Golubic reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in July, but has won just one game in three tournaments since on hard court.
If Andreescu reaches the third round, she could regain 27th seed Jelena Ostapenko. The Ontarian shares her quarter-table with Karolina Pliskova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Petra Kvitova and Maria Sakkari, among others.
At the bottom of the table, the young Leylah Fernandez, 72nd in the world, will face a qualified player in the first round and could then, in case of victory, cross swords with Yulia Puntintseva, 33rd in the WTA.
The favorite, the Australian Ashleigh Barty, will begin her quest for a first New York title against the Russian Vera Zvonareva.
Japan’s Naomi Osaka is at the bottom of the table and will start her title defense against Czech Marie Bouzkova.
