Another Epirotian who excels in artistic circles internationally is Persephone Michou. The “Stavros Niarchos” Foundation recognized her talent in photography from the time of her studies and at the moment Persephone is on a scholarship at the Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.
One after the other, magazines of the genre host her works and interviews, such as Kathimerini’s “K” on January 6-7 and photologio.gr on January 16, 2024.
The project: If I forget you, I will love you again was the occasion for praise.
This work involved editing the family photo album by adding new photos of her, in the same places that were captured years ago, ordinary moments of the family.
A modest person, with values and a clear sense of taste, she often returns to her home village, the Gymnotopos of Filippiadas, drawing images and experiences, healings of the soul and evidence of creativity. An aversion to speech in her latest interview is perhaps the most informative about her artistic outlook: “…memory is the starting point and my inner need to explore it motivates me. Then my intervention in the commemorative photographs comes to complement it and create something new, perhaps a statement…”.
Persephone Michou’s cyanotypes remove not only the unnecessary details that she chooses, but also the privacy of the photographs, so that they allow everyone to play with their own memories.
