A popular petition was started in Grotte Santo Stefano to ask for the reappointment of the general practitioner Gianfranco Taschini. In the document addressed to the extraordinary commissioner of the Viterbo local health authority, Egisto Bianconi, the undersigned citizens ask that: “the family doctor Dr. Gianfranco Taschini, who provides basic medical assistance in the hamlets of Grotte S. Stefano and sub hamlets of Montecalvello Vallebona and Fastello, is reconfirmed for another two years on a voluntary basis. Considering that the aforementioned hamlets are more than 20 kilometers away from Viterbo – the citizens highlight – and that many patients are elderly and unable to go to other medical practices located in Viterbo”. The signatories recall that: «after several meetings and telephone contacts that the citizens of Grotte S. Stefano had with the managers of the Viterbo Local Health Authority and with the “high poppies” of Viterbo politics the response was unanimous “you are part of the municipality of Viterbo, in the municipality there are general practitioners who have not reached the maximum loan amount, come to Vitebo. A superficial and convenient response that deeply disturbed all the elderly and frail people in the hamlet.”
“We asked ourselves – we read in the petition – but wasn’t there a shortage of general practitioners in the villages of the province? So, if there is a white fly that wants to work, why not let him do it? We firmly believe that if a general practitioner, fond of his patients, wants to stay for two years on a voluntary basis, it is good for the whole community.”
