The documentary ‘Sticks: The Most Beautiful Comes Now’ provides a unique and intimate insight into the life, working method and mindset of one of the Netherlands’ most influential modern musicians.
How do you continue to satisfy the creative hunger as an artist? Where do you find the uneasiness that makes you grow? And how do you deal with constant change? Writer and rapper Sticks (Junte Uiterwijk, 1982) is one of the most influential and successful artists in the Netherlands. Over the past twenty years, as a solo artist and with Opgezwolle and the Fakkelbrigade, he has released more than thirteen albums. What is hidden behind Sticks’ inexhaustible urge to create? To find out, documentary maker Matthijs van Camerijk followed the Zwollenaar for two years. It turns out to be a period in which Sticks is impressively expanding his impressive oeuvre, with four new projects. You can see the growth of Sticks as a person, and his search for ways to express this through new music. It turns out to be a process that involves pain and fear, but Sticks is persistent. Sticks: A documentary is not something I would say yes to. I want people to hear my music, but I also don’t want to show it. But part of me also wants to share that duality. That’s why I finally said yes. I hope I can inspire people, so show me that creative process.
