An 18-year-old man was sentenced in Angers (Maine-et-Loire) on Monday. He had been arrested five days earlier by customs at the town’s station. The defendant, who was then returning from Guyana, had tried to smuggle a large quantity of cocaine which he had ingested, reports West France.
The day of his arrest, the suspect had pretended to visit an uncle from Angers. After being tested positive for cocaine, he finally explained that he had picked up the drugs in Suriname and was responsible for delivering them to a man in the city. In total, he had swallowed 103 eggs of 95% pure cocaine, equivalent to more than a kilo of drugs.
At the hearing, the defendant justified his actions by a complicated financial situation. Father of an unborn child, he explained that he lived with his mother and had no income. For her part, the public prosecutor recalled that the arrests of “mules” were increasing in the town and deplored the ravages of drugs.
Finally, the man was sentenced to a year and a half in prison, in accordance with the requisitions.
