Director Tibo Pinsard filmed three people who do not know each other in their daily life, at the end of the 1st confinement. At this moment, in the midst of doubts, changes in government injunctions, he proposes “The open parenthesis”, an indefinite moment in the future time but well anchored in the present time.
Tibo Pinsard directed in 2020, in full imprisonment, “In parentheses”, a series of portraits in 15 episodes of people confined to their homes.
At the end of this first confinement, he returns with three of his characters in this documentary “The open parenthesis”.
What happened to these people when their life in parenthesis reopened and what changes have occurred as a result of this confinement?
In this film we find Jade, a fine arts student in Dijon, Bilel, a videomaker in Chalon-sur-Saône and Maude, a florist in Dijon.
For Jade, this episode of confinement resulted in a major upheaval. It took her a while to realize her because she, locked up in her bubble with her roommates, she lived “pretty good“This obligation. Reintegrating into her old life, going back to partying, going back to sport … it wasn’t that easy for the young woman.
Before, I burned my life, worked a lot, went out a lot, did a lot of sports… all at a speed that wasn’t feasible in the long run! Now I live “like a grandmother”
If at first she thinks that imprisonment has saved her life, she soon realizes that her psychological situation has worsened and that she has neglected the help she could ask for. She then decides to take the necessary measures to be treated by the CMP (psychological medical center) and start a real work of substance. Since this moment in life has been suspended, it is difficult for her to project herself into the future. : “There was the world before, a certain way of behaving … a state that we can no longer find. Now time tastes different.”
According to one INSEE study published in November 2021, the mental health status of young people under 30 has significantly worsened due to the health crisis and its social and economic impacts. This sharp increase is mainly driven by 18-24 year olds for whom the prevalence doubles (from 10% in 2019 to 22% in May 2020).
The repercussions of this confinement have not been negative for everyone.
Maude, pregnant in her first delivery, saw her priorities change when her daughter was born.
Previously, she regularly worked in her flower shop from 7:30 am to 7:00 pm, not to mention even busier days during the holiday periods. The arrival of Covid forced him to close his shop and live the end of his pregnancy more peacefully.
I put less pressure on myself and it’s doing just as well, even better! The period we are experiencing right now, I think is a parenthesis … that will lead us to the best
Bilel dreams of becoming a director.
This self-taught man learned his trade on the Internet by watching tutorials and watching and analyzing many movies. The period of imprisonment allowed him to ask the right questions about his professional future.
At 30, I feel that my birth took place during childbirth. I want to professionalize myself as a director and not as a content creator for social networks
For the moment the young man is not living off his passion and after spending some time delivering medicines at night, he has taken on a job as a supervisor in a high school to support himself.
Through word of mouth, Bilel is recognized by these young high school students as a video creator. He never misses an opportunity to get involved with some of these film-loving students.
None of the three know each other, yet their questions resonate deeply with each other.
