A painting from Claude Monet’s “Meules” series was acquired on Tuesday in New York for $ 110.7 million (111.6 million francs) during a sale organized by Sotheby’s. This is a record for the French painter at auction.
The 72 cm by 92 cm canvas is part of a series painted by Monet during the winter of 1890-1891 in his house in Giverny, in Normandy. Another of these “Grindstones” was sold in November 2016 by Christie’s in New York for $ 81.4 million.
Like this copy, the painting auctioned on Tuesday represents a haystack at dusk.
The owner who put the painting up for sale, an anonymous collector, acquired it in 1986 at a sale at Christie’s, New York, for just $ 2.5 million.
The previous record for a painting by Monet dates back to May 2018. During a sale at Christie’s in New York, the “Water Lilies in Bloom” had been acquired for 84.6 million dollars.
