A nuclear power plant in the United States has released 1.5 million liters of radioactive water.

A tritium water leak occurred at the Monticello nuclear power plant in Minnesota, USA, in November last year, but this became known only now.

The American energy company Xcel Energy at the end of November 2022 discovered and localized a leak of water with tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen.

The Minnesota Emissions Control Agency (MPCA) said government agencies are monitoring efforts to clean up “tritium-contaminated water releases” found at the company’s Monticello plant.

The agency said that the leak was stopped and it did not reach the Mississippi River, as well as sources of drinking water.
