A northern California town is colder than Barrow, Alaska

A cold wave continued to hit Northern California, including more freezing temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service, it was actually colder in Alturas, California, in Modoc County, in the far northeast corner of California, than it was in Barrow, Alaska.

Barrow sits above the Arctic Circle and is the northernmost city in the United States. Alturas registered minus 3 degrees, while Barrow registered 3 degrees above zero. It was even colder in Alturas on Saturday, minus 5 degrees, which broke the record set in 1931, and that was warmer than a point in California, in the Lassen National Forest, east of Redding, which was found to be less eleven.

The Sacramento Valley also saw outstanding cold Sunday morning. In Stockton it was 25 degrees, while Redding registered 22. Both exceeded the lowest temperature of the day. The San Francisco Bay Area has also seen freezing temperatures.

Northern California has been hit by a series of winter storms in recent weeks that have dumped heavy amounts of snow in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The snow and cold have been a boon for the ski industry, which has struggled through several years of drought.

Forecasters say another storm coming from the north is likely to arrive this week.
