It is an extremely rare discovery that was put forward by a team of researchers in Australia on Monday March 8. On Lady Elliot Island, scientists responsible for monitoring the region’s ecosystem took in a newborn albino turtle.
To better understand the rarity of this phenomenon, The Guardian reports that a member of the research team, who has been involved in turtle monitoring work on the reef for more than 30 years, said that only one in 100,000 eggs laid will result in an albino newborn. Scientists also found that another egg from the same nest had the same disease, but failed to hatch.
The British newspaper recalls that albinism is an inherited disease characterized by a total or partial absence of pigmentation, resulting in white or pink specimens. Animals with this disease see their life expectancy is drastically reduced because they do not have the capacity to camouflage themselves.
