A new wood chip thermal power plant will be built in Valmiera for 3.9 million euros :: Dienas Bizness

AS “Valmieras enerģija”, a joint venture of the municipality of Valmiera region and energy company “Adven Latvia”, will build a new wood chip boiler in the Ausekļa street area in the city for 3.9 million euros, inform the Adven representatives.

The Škelda boiler house in the town of Valmiera, 1 Rietekļa street, will be built with support from the European Union (EU) Cohesion Fund. The total funding of the project is 3,902,522 euros, of which 1,330,785 euros of EU co-financing is earmarked for the project.

Currently, the production of thermal energy in the Ausekļa Street area is provided by another thermal energy producer, which uses natural gas fuel equipment. After the implementation of the project, the thermal energy production in this area will be fully ensured by “Valmieras energija”.

One of the main objectives of the project is to provide all consumers of the centralized heat supply system of the city of Valmiera with a stable and secure heat supply at an affordable price, as well as to reduce the dependence of the heat supply tariff and fuel availability on imported fossil fuels.

Māris Kānītis, board member of Valmieras enerģija, says the company has already modernized centralized heat supply sources on both the right and left banks. “The project of the new thermal power station at 1 Rietekļa street will be our next challenge and an important step in the development of centralized heat supply in the city of Valmiera,” says Kānītis.

Planning and preparations are currently underway to start the procurement and construction of construction works as soon as possible, so that heating from the new heat source will be supplied as early as 2024.

Mārcis Smalkais, project manager of “Adven Latvia”, explains that with the construction of a new wood chip boiler, the share of renewable energy resources in the city of Valmiera will increase to more than 90% of the total fuel used for energy production thermal. After the implementation of the project, it is expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 3042 tons per year.

At the same time, the company sold the old thermal plant in via Rīgas 25 to the Municipality of Valmiera, which has been transformed into the contemporary art space “Kurtuve” and in the future will also be the temporary headquarters of the Valmiera prose theatre.

Last year the turnover of “Valmieras Energia” was 3.05 million euros and the profit 434,681 euros.

“Valmieras energija” was registered in 1999 and its registered capital is 2,071,300 euros. SIA “Adven Latvia” of the group of thermal energy companies “Adven/Varmvarden” owns 52.15% of the shares of “Valmieras energijas”, and the municipality of Valmiera – 47.85% of the shares.
