a new treatment at Laval hospital reduces mortality in intensive care

This is a new weapon in the fight against the Covid-19 epidemic. Patients in intensive care, at Laval hospital and in other establishments in the Pays de la Loire region, benefit from a new treatment, injections of tocilizumab, which reduces mortality. Three scientific studies have demonstrated its effectiveness.

“For a year, we have learned to know this disease better”

In one year, the medical strategy against the virus has progressed dramatically. That said, it is not a miracle treatment would like to hammer home doctor Hussein Yassine, the head of the intensive care unit of the Laval hospital center, the anti-coronavirus reference establishment in Mayenne: “It is an additional treatment, it is an additional weapon. We learned in one year to know this disease better and therefore to fight it better. We use several treatments, the first is high oxygen therapy. flow, the second it is the antibiotics only if we notice superinfections, the third approach it is the corticosteroids which have shown beneficial effects. And now therefore, we have tocilizumab which makes it possible to block an inflammatory reaction which participates in the aggravation of the disease. It is hoped that with these associated treatments we will soon see a decrease in mortality and a shorter hospital stay. ”

It is an additional treatment, it is an additional weapon.

The Mayenne doctor insists that it is by no means a miracle cure. He said that the best tool to fight against this damn virus remains vaccination and calls for compliance with barrier measures.

According to the latest figures provided by the Regional Health Agency, epidemiological indicators are on the rise in Mayenne. The incidence rate for the entire Mayenne population rose from 141 to 188.3 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in a few days. There are still 62 people hospitalized, six of whom are in intensive care. Two additional deaths are to be deplored since March 16. The balance sheet now stands at 238 dead since the start of the epidemic in our department.
