Researchers from the University of Sao Paulo have discovered a new variant of COVID-19, reports Globo, citing the vice president of the Brazilian Society of Virology Joao Pessoa Araujo Jr.
According to the newspaper, the variant of the P4 virus has an unknown origin. It was first found in a sample from Mococa, a municipality in Sao Paulo, after which it spread to Porto Ferreira.
“It is not yet possible to determine whether it is more contagious or dangerous than the common virus,” the newspaper said.
It is also reported that the new variant P4 has a common origin with the Brazilian variants P1 and P2 and encounters in the Philippines P3 – all of them belong to line B.1.1.28.
According to Joao Araujo, it is now important to recognize the existence of the new strain of coronavirus in the country, as it is spreading rapidly in the region and has already been found in nine municipalities in Sao Paulo.
