This project, representing an investment totaling nearly $6.4 million, was initiated 13 years ago by the Chelsea Housing Corporation in collaboration with the Government of Quebec, the Government of Canada and the Municipality of Chelsea.

The residence which will finally see the light of day next fall aims to allow seniors to stay within their community, while benefiting from affordable rent and safe and adapted housing.

The president of the Chelsea Housing Corporation, Céline Brault, explains that a large part of the elderly population of Chelsea, who have contributed to the Chelsea community, have difficulty remaining in their homes to live out the last years of their lives. .

“Some are forced to leave the region, their family and community, to find housing more suited to their needs and at affordable prices. » – Céline Brault

Significant investments

The Government of Quebec is the primary funder of the project to which it contributed $1 million, through the AccèsLogis Québec program of the Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ). The Government of Canada provided $10,000 through the Rapid Housing Initiative.

The City of Chelsea is allocating $5.2 million to the project, of which more than $4.1 million comes from the Government of Quebec under the tripartite agreements that the Municipality signed with the SHQ and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

“These 12 new homes will allow our seniors to continue to live in their community close to the people they care about. These people deserve to benefit from a quality living environment at affordable prices,” announces the Member of Parliament for Gatineau and member of the Office of the National Assembly, Robert Bussière.

Up to 9 of the 12 households in the future building could benefit from the SHQ’s Quebec rent supplement program, which would allow them to pay 25% of their income for housing. This additional assistance totaling nearly $155,000, spread over five years, is assumed 90% by the SHQ and 10% by the City of Chelsea.

“This first shovelful of earth represents the commitment of an entire community to create a warm, safe and loving place for our seniors,” concluded Chelsea Mayor Pierre Guénard.
