Russia has developed a new drone that is immune to electronic interference signals. This drone uses a very simple technology: the vehicle is controlled by fiber optic cables instead of radio waves.
The Ukrainian army has achieved several successes in the past two and a half years. In the last few weeks he has even attacked the Russian region of Kursk. That was possible, in part due to the effective disruption of Russia’s communications and control systems. Russia’s new fiber optic drone could now undermine this strategy.
The drone was developed by the Ushkuynik science and production center in the Russian city of Novgorod. By using fiber optic cables, the aircraft can be accurately controlled, even in areas where radio communication is interrupted. This is similar to the technique used in wire-guided missiles. The drone was first reported on the Siberian Army Telegram military channel.
Also already available on the commercial market
Also Ukraine it would work on a similar technology, messaging Forbes. In addition, the German company HIGHCAT was expected to show a fiber optic drone in Ukraine this month. There is also a company in Singapore that offers fiber optic drone control systems on the commercial market. The company, Skywalker Technology, also sells several types drones with military applications.
However, this technology also has its drawbacks. The range of the drone is limited by the length of the cable. In addition, the cable may be damaged or tangled. Finally, the operator must be relatively close to the target, which is a little more dangerous than controlling drones from the comfort of his home.
