“A new roof for Maison Chapais” campaign

The Patrimonial Association of Saint-Denis-De La Bouteillerie is kicking off its campaign “A new roof for Maison Chapais”. The objective is to raise $ 10,000 in order to complete the budget necessary for the restoration of the eastern cedar shingle roof.

The house, which turns 187 this year, is designated a national historic site and listed as a heritage building. The Victorian architecture of Maison Chapais forms an important part of the image of the village of Saint-Denis. “The red roof with two curved slopes with return of the drip edge is one of the building’s most distinctive elements,” said Maha Farah Elmir, general manager of Maison Chapais.

The total costs of the project are estimated at $ 200,000 due to regulatory requirements governing protected sites. “The roof will be restored in eastern cedar shingles, just like at the time. This will allow us to retain full cachet and maintain artisanal know-how, ”explains Maha Farah Elmir. The Maison Chapais team also specifies that they want the work to be awarded to a company in the region.

Much of the funding was obtained through government programs and the Association is now looking to the Kamouraska community to complete the budget. While the issue of heritage preservation is at the heart of the news with Bill 69, the “A new roof for Maison Chapais” campaign represents the golden opportunity to raise awareness in the community about heritage conservation. “The revitalization of heritage does not happen by itself, it requires political and social will. Choosing to contribute to the conservation of a heritage building also means choosing to keep alive a history, a memory, a know-how, a collective identity, ”says Maha Farah Elmir. Especially since Maison Chapais is the most important tourist attraction in its locality. “The simple fact of preserving this house contributes to the attractiveness of Saint-Denis and, by the same token, to the well-being of its community”, notes Ms. Nicole Généreux, President of the Association.

The campaign is launched via the Canadon platform on Tuesday, December 1, as part of the #MardiJeDonne day. For each donation of $ 20 and more made during the day, Canadon will give $ 2 for the new roof of Maison Chapais.
