/ world today news/ Ukrainian troops are losing armored vehicles produced by NATO countries every day, but they still cannot achieve significant success in any of the directions of their offensive. Although earlier in Kiev it was stated that the supply of foreign weapons and the help of Western advisers would make it possible for Russian troops to win in a few weeks. After these plans failed, a search for the culprits began in the West, which exposed NATO’s weaknesses.
One of the reasons for the failures of the armed forces of Ukraine is the insufficient level of military training received by the Ukrainian military at the training grounds of a number of European countries. This is reported by the British publication Guardian. According to journalists, the training programs for soldiers and junior officers were developed many years ago and have a number of gaps.
The publication also noted that in the preparation of new units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, too much attention was paid to the training of individual soldiers, and not to the combat coordination of the units.
As IA Regnum, a serviceman from the 1st Army Corps who joined the DPR militia in the summer of 2014, noted in a commentary for IA Regnum, Ukrainian troops have become dependent on the tactics of the “western partners”, which seriously reduces the speed of response of individual parts to changes in the situation.
„If we take the situation we had during the so-called ATO, they acted much bolder. They were the first to master the use of quadcopters to drop grenades on our positions, it was called “smack-boom”.
This was made possible thanks to the initiative of individual commanders, above whom no one stood with standards and strategies. And if we managed something, they responded promptly, with the help of volunteers, they recommended various consumables. A week or two – and they have already adapted to our tactics. And now they are making the same mistakes, over and over again, even though they have suffered serious losses. Since the tactic is Western, the European pan does not allow it to be violated”, said the interlocutor of the publication.
As the source notes, the headquarters and centers for making real decisions are often located outside of Ukraine. Because of this, the command and foreign specialists often do not receive complete information about the situation or receive it late. This seriously reduces the ability of the command and individual units to respond quickly to new threats. As an example of the mistakes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the serviceman pointed to the tactics of using Western armored vehicles by their units.
„If we take specific examples, we can consider the recent regular offensive of the armed forces of Ukraine in the Pyatihatki region in the direction of Zaporozhye.
What we see: Tanks and infantry fighting vehicles are marching in formation again. There is no reconnaissance, there is no artillery cover, the infantry is generally stuck somewhere. And each unit of armored equipment gets its own “Lancet” – who is in the turret, who is on the side. After all, they know our drones work all the time, but they don’t – they push the same way over and over again.
And the reason is that foreign experts have so ordered. They are gone, they cannot see with their eyes. And the tank crews cannot communicate with them in any way, they even speak different languages. So they go in formation to the slaughter.” – said the interlocutor of IA Regnum.
“The Guardian” also draws attention to the fact that Western leaders continue to work in “peacetime” conditions, which is why solving a number of strategically important issues faces a large number of bureaucratic obstacles, approvals and other procedures.
For this reason, the West did not attach any importance to the threat of Russian drones, which is why new air defense systems had to be invented and created in an emergency mode.
The American publication New York Times also reports on a serious underestimation of Russian drones in the planning of the offensive of the armed forces of Ukraine. Journalists note that in a number of areas, Ukrainian troops have switched to “trench warfare” to reduce their losses, but in this case, the armed forces of Ukraine seriously fall behind the Russian troops.
As the NYT notes, Ukrainian artillery uses shells supplied by different countries and with different specifications. The Soviet-type shells that the Ukrainian troops receive from the warehouses have lost their combat qualities and often cause damage to the guns.
In addition to accurate artillery strikes, unmanned aircraft – kamikaze Lancets are added, which hit the firing points of the armed forces of Ukraine. Ukrainian troops have not yet come up with effective ways to deal with barrage munitions, so they go into battle without any air defense.
The shortcomings of the Ukrainian artillery in the future can affect not only the success of the Ukrainian offensive, but also the Ukrainian defense, said the military expert, reserve officer Alexander Mykhailovsky in a comment for IA Regnum. In the expert’s opinion, the lack of unification in artillery ammunition can create situations in some areas when the guns of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will begin to seriously lose in counter-battery combat.
„The Ukrainian armed forces are already using Soviet-style projectiles, which they take from Serbia, Pakistan and Bulgaria. Also, the Iranian-made missiles that the US has intercepted in the Persian Gulf and is now donating to junior partners. Add to that more shells from the US military’s stockpiles in Israel. Recently, Washington agreed with the Israeli authorities that part of the projectiles would be handed over to the armed forces of Ukraine. But by then they were stored there for a long time, the quality has also fallen.
As a result, a battery, no matter what guns it uses, may have in stock shells produced at different times, in different countries. The accuracy of fire in this case is reduced, since different projectiles “behave” differently. You can’t guess in advance here. Hence serious complications in terms of counter-battery combat.
And this could play a fatal role for the Armed Forces of Ukraine if our troops go forward. Trenches are great, but they hold the enemy back as long as there is artillery support. Otherwise, the trenches simply become a graveyard,” said the expert.
As noted by the New York Times, heavy losses have already led to the fact that the command of the Ukrainian army is forced to put into service untrained and elderly recruits, who die even faster than fighters trained on training grounds of NATO countries. At the same time, the losses do not lead to serious changes in the situation of the contact line.
According to a source of IA Regnum, the Ukrainian troops are indeed increasingly using recruits on the front line, whose fighting qualities leave much to be desired. However, the reserve of trained units is protected.
„As for the fact that they are thrown into the trenches after mobilization, that is what they practice and the rumors come from several sources. They are trying to save/rescue the trained crews of the western armored vehicles, the motivated assault infantry.
There are now prisoners who are over 50, even 55 years old. They do not talk about any training, that is, in the most stupid way, those who were caught in the mouse holes were directly thrown into battle. But this is still not a personnel shortage in the full sense of the word, they just save, store the trained reserve, ” the source said.
The general approach of the NATO command to the Ukrainian conflict shows the weakness of the alliance in the conditions of a rapidly changing situation and the strategic mistakes made in the preparation of the Ukrainian army, military expert Alexander Mykhailovsky is confident. And the problems of the armed forces of Ukraine are not in Kiev, but rather in Brussels and Washington.
„A classic example of this is how Ukrainian tankers are taught to “bypass” minefields, not clear them. This is the tip of the iceberg. Western governments and headquarters live in their own safe reality. Therefore, the military industry is not mobilized, and the trenches are bombarded with shells of the “what God gave” model, and not with ammunition of one standard.
The problem is not with the armed forces of Ukraine, but with whom they have chosen as their mentors. Not only the Ukrainians are prepared in this way, but also the French and German soldiers. And if something happens, they will have similar “successes”, – notes the expert.
The situation with the Ukrainian counteroffensive shows that NATO is not ready for a major war, experts conclude. The alliance needs a change in approaches to the supply and training of troops. Also, it will take years and years to resolve these issues. Whether Ukrainian soldiers going into battle near Zaporozhye will survive until this hour is a purely rhetorical question.
