A new predator in the Black Sea, fishermen calm down – 2024-05-12 07:42:46

A new predator is breeding in the waters of the Black Sea – the grouper fish. Experts warn about the problem.

By tradition, May 9 marked the beginning of the fishing season with the blessing of St. Nicholas. The saint will watch over the fishermen until the beginning of winter, say the people from the settlement “Chengene Skele” in Burgas.

“This grouper fish is something of a legend. Everyone has heard of her, but no one has seen her. If we go to inquire in the fishing village, we will see that 90% of the fishermen have not heard of her. However, it is one of the tastiest fish,” long-time fisherman Georgi Dimov-Chicagoto explained to bTV.

He said that he had been in the ocean for many years and had managed to catch a grouper. He explains that there are many types of grouper, from 4-kilogram fish to 400-kilogram specimens that are at least two meters long.

“It’s really a very tasty fish, which is prohibited to catch because of the excessive interest in it by fishermen,” explains the Chicago.

According to him, there are more perches in the Black Sea that come with the ships. He pointed out, however, that groupers are mostly found in the Aegean Sea, and “no wonder there are also in the Black Sea, but that doesn’t mean anything.”

“That this fish is a predator is not a problem. There are other predators too – like sharks. Dolphins also consume large amounts of fish. In my opinion, the grouper will not do much damage, because we are talking about a rare species of fish. It is not a passage fish to be had in large quantities,” added the long-time fisherman.

According to him, the biggest predator is man because he catches fish in large quantities, while the grouper uses as much fish as it needs to eat.

“Rapan, thanks to being bought up, is almost extinct. He came many years ago to the Black Sea with the help of Japanese ships. It has evolved here because there is no natural pest. It mainly eats shellfish,” said Georgi Dimov-Chicagoto.
