As in Japan, the book is published in two volumes in Latvia, both of which can be purchased together. This is also the first time that Latvian readers can buy an e-book of Murakami’s novel, so far this has not been possible.

According to the publishers, similar to the author’s previous novels, this work by Haruki Murakami can be read as a simple message about a painter who is abandoned by his wife and who tries to understand in philosophical peace both what has happened in their two lives and how to live in the future. But it can also be read as a philosophical journey into the depths of the creative person: what does art mean, the opportunity to create, what is the engine and driving force of creativity, where the “real” art lies and is it simply distinguishable from the “false”? How to live with yourself and your desires, are they important, and why does one try to create at all?

As the book’s publishers emphasize, Haruki Murakami openly and ironically reveals himself as a creative personality and reflects on various aspects of creativity, thinking about identity, including national. These reflections, enriched with the usual dose of mysticism expected by readers, the singing of girls who have barely reached puberty, discussions about personality traits and the easily alienated, yet open manner of the message, to some extent echo Murakami’s own creative work, reminiscences of “Great Getsby” flower times.

Murakami portrays the artist’s life as an endless act of creation, the need to express himself, and at the same time – paradoxically – the loneliness of the mystery is contemplated.

“Murakami’s reality has several facets: some – simple, others – sophisticated. No other author can confuse elements of everyday life, fantasy and esotericism in such strangely captivating stories as Murakami,” writes The Financial Times.

Haruki Murakami was born in 1949 in Kyoto, Japan and is the brightest and best-known Japanese writer of today. His books have been translated into more than 50 languages and are printed in millions of copies. Haruki Murakami has received many international literary awards, including the Jerusalem Prize (2009) and the Hans Christian Andersen Prize (2016).
