A new medical training offer at Notre-Dame-du-Lac hospital

The CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent and the Faculty of Medicine of the Université Laval are proud to announce that the Hôpital de Notre-Dame-du-Lac will now welcome students for their integrated longitudinal internship (ELI). A first student started her training on October 31st. Her stay at the Notre-Dame-du-Lac hospital will continue until May 7, 2023. She will then complete her longitudinal internship at the GrandPortage Regional Hospital Center from May 8 to September 17, 2023.

The Hôpital de Notre-Dame-du-Lac will offer future and future doctors in training continuous clinical exposure, whether in surgery, internal medicine or obstetrics. Students will also have the opportunity to follow patients throughout their treatment journey. Unlike the traditional internship, which takes place mainly in Quebec hospitals, the integrated longitudinal internship allows for a one-year learning period almost entirely in the regions. This training provides early and ongoing clinical experience in family medicine, giving access to other medical specialties. In addition to the Notre-Dame-du-Lac and Rivière-du-Loup establishments, the Rimouski regional hospital and the Matane hospital welcome students from ELI and other hospitals in Lower Saint-Laurent are expected to do the same in the coming years.

The medical team of the Notre-Dame-du-Lac hospital has been welcoming outpatients and residents in family medicine since the early 1990s. These trainees support the family doctors of the hospital and the CLSC in the emergency department and inpatients. Since 2006, the specialist doctors of the Notre-Dame-du-Lac hospital have also contributed to the deployment of the University Group of Family Medicine (GMF-U) in Trois-Pistoles by offering additional internships in internal medicine.

The presence of these outsiders bears witness to the will of the Faculty of Medicine of the Université Laval to enhance and promote medical practice outside the large centres. This collaboration agreement with the CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent is part of the Aventure Medicine project, which has made it possible to offer a doctorate in medicine to Rimouski from this autumn. A first cohort of 18 students started training a few weeks ago.
