A new Kim Jong-un: new coupe and 20 kilograms lighter | Abroad

Images of the military parade were circulated Thursday by North Korean state media in a square in the center of the capital Pyongyang. It shows an apparently remarkably fit Kim reappearing in public for the first time in months at the stroke of midnight: with a haircut modeled on that of his grandfather Kim Il-sung, the founder of the North Korean republic, and estimated to twenty pounds lighter.

Kim didn’t speak on Wednesday, but was apparently in a good mood. He gave the parade participants thumbs up and kissed the children who came to give him flowers.

Kim, 37, who is clearly obese in the recent past and reportedly an alcoholic, has long been the subject of speculation about health problems, especially given his family’s history of heart problems; both his father and grandfather died of heart failure.

According to professor Yang Moo-jin at Seoul University, Kim probably wants to “project the image of a normal statesman.”
