Most of the flights scheduled for today from the airport on the island of Palma in the Canary Islands in Spain were canceled due to a cloud of volcanic ash from the volcano Cumbre Vieja, which erupted for nearly a month, AFP reported.
30 of the 34 flights scheduled for today have been canceled.
The eruption of the volcano on the island with 85,000 inhabitants has not caused any casualties so far, but has caused serious damage and caused the evacuation of 7,000 people. More than 1,800 buildings and 736 hectares were destroyed.

The volcano shows no signs of calm. An earthquake measuring 4.6 at a depth of 37 kilometers was registered on the island earlier this morning. This is the strongest earthquake since the beginning of the eruption of Cumbre Vieja.
Since 19.12 pm a notable sustained eruptive with an umbrella-like ash cloud (still expanding) is observed at #OldCumVolcano. @Involcan has indicated a new vent has formed SE from the main vent.

This is the third volcanic eruption on the island in a century, after the eruptions of the volcano San Juan in 1949 and Tenegia in 1971, which killed three people but did not cause as much material damage.
