A new drinking water treatment plant in the pipes

The Vienna Waters union will build a new water treatment plant in Nuns to replace aging equipment in the city center. An investment of more than 20M €.

The Eaux de Vienne union will spend between € 20 and € 25 million for the construction of a new Chtellerault drinking water plant. The objective is to replace the factory installed in the city center, rue Jules-Duvau, just next to the Manu dam.

It turns out that the current equipment is old and narrow, and does not offer a guarantee of durability.. This work is aging. It no longer meets the implementation of future standards, explains Rmy Coopman, President of Vienna-Siveer Waters. We had two choices. Either renovate the current plant, which would have been costly and only postpone the problem for ten years, or relocate the plant and build a new unit.

Problems
of quality
raw water

The project pursues a threefold objective, which aims to maintain the quality of drinking water, secure the resource and meet growing needs. In the Grand Chtellerault sector, our water resource comes mainly from the Vienne (1). However, there are problems with the quality of raw water, in particular cyanobacteria, which require new processes for the treatment., explicit Rmy Coopman.
In 2015, the municipality of Chtellerault completed a resource security program with the creation of two basins in the Nonnes area, a warning station and a catchment at Cenon-sur-Vienne. It is in the same sector, that of Nuns, that the new factory should see the light of day. Its capacity will be 20,000m per day, against 15,000m today, for 47 municipalities.
Still on the same security register, a mix of water from the Vienne and borehole water should be assured, as explained by Yves Kocher, general manager of the Vienna water services. this effect, one or two additional boreholes 200 or 300 meters deep will be achieved. It will also be taken into account interconnection possibilities with other networks.

2026 target

Several studies are already underway, according to the union, and a major projects engineer has been mobilized. We must implement the right techniques and take into account the changes that will occur, sums up the chairman. The provisional schedule is for entry into service in 2026.
Beyond Grand Chtellerault and its 75,000 inhabitants, the new plant should serve other towns to the north and south, in the Grand Poitiers sector.

(1) Two water intakes are installed on the river, Cenon-sur-Vienne and Vaux-sur-Vienne.

The effects of global warming

The quality of raw water from the Vienne is a problem, forcing the treatment to be stepped up. Cyanobatria, suspended matter, turbidity … The phenomenon is partly linked to heating. Since 2019, the Grand Chtellerault sector has encountered problems mainly with raw water. The temperature of the water, sampled in the Vienne, increases in summer, which generates the appearance of undesirable substances and degrades the quality of the water, explains one at Eaux de Vienne.
