Authorities in the United States report a new dangerous “fashion” among anti-vaccine circles – to drink iodine as a treatment for COVID-19, Business Insider reports.
The antiseptic liquid is used for disinfection in operations, injuries and other wounds, killing most of the bacteria we know.
In the United States, iodine is known as Betadine, and the company issued an official statement that the liquid is not drunk, but applied only to the skin.
“Our products have no efficacy in the treatment or prevention of COVID-19 or any other virus,” the company said.
Large doses of iodine can cause many health problems, including impaired kidney function, thyroid dysfunction. Iodine ingestion also causes damage to the soft tissues in the stomach.
