A New Cold War Has Started, Russia-China Successfully Defeat the West

MOSCOW Uni Soviet may have lost in The cold War first, but Russia excel in rematch with United States of America (USA) and, this time, have every chance of being on top. This was stated by one of the famous Moscow scholars, Sergey Karaganov.

Speaking to the Russian newspaper Argumenty I Fakty, the academic argued that Moscow is now much stronger than it was during the late Soviet period, and the West is weaker than it was then.

Karaganov has been one of Russia’s foreign policy theorists for decades, and has also been an adviser to President Vladimir Putin in the past. He is currently the head of the faculty of World Economics and International Affairs at the Higher School of Economics (HSE), a prestigious university in Moscow.

He is also famous for the ‘Karaganov doctrine’, which states that Moscow should act as a human rights defender for ethnic Russians living abroad.

“There are several factors that allow us to talk about a good chance of success,” he explained as quoted by Russia Today, Sunday (1/8/2021).

First, he claims, during the Cold War, the Soviet Union was concerned about enemies on more than one front. Now, with Beijing on Moscow’s side, Russia can take advantage of China as a strategic resource, he continued. Second, the country is much more prosperous than the last years of the Soviet Union. And most importantly, the West is significantly less powerful than in the past.

“But, to win even against a weakened but still strong West, we need to pursue the right policies, both at home and abroad,” Karaganov warned.

He also pointed to the Soviet Union’s “burden” that did not apply to Russia, such as what he described as Moscow’s need to feed half the world despite local food shortages, as an advantage in the current situation. He sees the lack of a dependent client country as an advantage in Russia’s current situation.
