A new case of COVID-19 in Gaspésie, this Saturday | Coronavirus

Although the month of June is very young to draw conclusions, the epidemiological situation of the first days resembles that of the end of March and the beginning of April.

Four cases were identified in the first five days of the month. The two outbreaks that occurred in May in the RCMs of Avignon and Haute-Gaspésie are gradually resolving.

Health authorities report three new people considered recovered. This leaves only 14 active carriers of the virus in the region. There are seven of these people in each of the MRCs of Avignon and Haute-Gaspésie. There is no longer anyone officially contagious in all the other MRCs in the territory since the start of the week.

Due to this good epidemiological record, the Gaspésie Îles-de-la-Madeleine will go to the green alert pre-stage on Monday.

Earlier this week, the region’s alert level had not been lowered like that of many other regions of Quebec because, according to the regional director of public health, Dr. Yv Bonnier-Viger, of the two May outbreaks.

The doctor indicates that he was able to convince the Minister of Health and the Director of Public Health of Quebec, Dr. Horacio Arruda, that the situation was completely under control.

Happy with this change in alert level, Dr Bonnier-Viger reminds us that we must not lose sight of basic hygiene measures, even if more and more people are vaccinated.

Vaccination

Nearly 70% of the Gaspé population, all age categories combined, received a first dose of vaccine while 12% have already received their second dose. In the Madelinot archipelago, this percentage is even higher since 80% of the population has been vaccinated and more than a quarter with the two doses of the vaccine.

To date, 2,030 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Gaspé and the Islands. A person is still hospitalized due to the illness which is the cause of 46
deaths in the region.

Three cases of COVID-19 were added to the results of the Bas-Saint-Laurent health and social services center on Saturday. None of these new infections were detected in the MRCs of Matanie, Mitis and Matapedia.

It is not only in the Gaspé that the spread of the virus is slowing down. Quebec reports 228 new cases and a sharp drop in hospitalizations. Public health also reports four new deaths for a total of 11,150 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
