Kate Middleton opted for a statement pair of earrings for her surprise date with Prince William, but ditched one of the most iconic items in her royal jewelry box.
The Princess of Wales, 42, joined her husband on a surprise visit to Southport, England, on October 10 to support the grieving community following the mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance class in the summer in which three young girls were killed. It was also Princess Kate’s first public engagement since she announced she was done with chemotherapy.
Kate wore her Catherine Zoraida gold fern leaf earrings, which she has owned for years and which she previously wore to a children’s picnic at the Chelsea Flower Show in May 2023.
Kate’s choice of fern earrings carried special meaning.
The fern is considered a symbol of endurance, resilience and new beginnings, thanks to its ability to survive in different conditions, notes BTA. The unfolding fronds of the fern represent fresh growth and renewal.
People has learned that the Prince and Princess of Wales wanted to visit Southport to show the community that they are not forgotten and that they will continue to stand by them, making it hoped that the earrings mean a poignant choice for the emotional day.
Princess Kate also stepped out with a stack of glittering rings on her left ring finger. The Princess of Wales was without her iconic sapphire and diamond engagement ring, which previously belonged to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.
Although Kate has spent most of this year out of the limelight, she showed off the dazzling ring Prince William proposed to her with in 2010 during her two official summer outings – Trooping the Color and Wimbledon – before his visit to Southport. However, she did not wear her engagement ring during her subsequent appearances.
Nor did she wear it when she met the teenage photographer, who is battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer, during a private meeting at Windsor Castle on October 2. However, she wore another pair of meaningful earrings.
Princess Kate did not wear the sapphire ring in the Aug. 11 video she and Prince William posted to congratulate Team Great Britain on their success at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and left it out again in the Sept. 9 video. in which he announced that chemotherapy was over.
Instead, Kate wore what looks like the same eternal ring of dark gemstones and diamonds, a hypothesis that an expert confirmed to People.
“The ring Kate wore is definitely a newer addition to her jewelry box. It’s a thin, shimmery eternity band with alternating light and dark gemstones,” said Lauren Keena, founder of The Court Jeweler blog.
“Many of these rings reflect family relationships. “Given that her children’s birthstones are rubies, emeralds and diamonds, I wouldn’t be surprised if the gems set in the new ring are related to her children George, Charlotte and Louis,” Kienna says of what could to be the deeper meaning.
During an outing in Southport on October 10, Princess Kate dons the same multi-coloured ring with what appears to be her Welsh gold wedding band, complemented by white gold and ‘Annushka’ diamonds and what appears to be a second new diamond ring.
Kate, Princess of Wales, made a surprise appearance with the Prince of Wales on a visit to Southport, where they held a private meeting with the bereaved families of three children killed in a knife attack in July, the BBC reported.
This was Catherine’s first official public engagement since completing her chemotherapy treatment.
Royal sources claim she decided to join Prince William to show off hers “support, empathy and compassion for the local community”.
The couple spoke to rescuers who helped at the scene of the stabbing in the north-west seaside town. Kate hugged some of the rescuers, and Fire Chief Phil Garrigan said that “she saw the emotion in them”.
The royal’s visit to Southport was planned as a low-key affair so she could spend time alone with the families of the three children who died and the yoga teacher who was present during the attack.
But Kate was a surprise addition as she made one of her few public appearances this year after revealing her cancer diagnosis.
Dressed in a long, autumn-looking brown coat, she arrived with her husband to meet the families of the bereaved and the rescuers, who Prince William described as “heroes”.
After her chemotherapy ended, Kate began to gradually return to active activity, notes the BBC.
