On Wednesday, November 30, Pope Francis appointed Father Jean Bondu auxiliary bishop of Rennes. The Breton diocese no longer had an auxiliary bishop since the appointment of Msgr. Alexandre Joly in Troyes in December 2021. On 7 October, the Holy Father then appointed the vicar general of the diocese of Vannes, Father Ivan Brient, to the position of auxiliary bishop of Rennes. But Father Brient eventually gave up his episcopal ordination two weeks before, deeming the burden “too heavy” and for health reasons. A renunciation accepted by the Pope on Wednesday 16 November.
It is therefore father Jean Bondu who will begin this new mission with the archbishop of Rennes, mgr. Pierre d’Ornellas. Father Bondu was born on 17 July 1966 in Les Essarts, in the Vendean diocese of Luçon. He attended the Seminary of Angers then that of Nantes.
On 14 June 1992 he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Luçon.
He then held the following offices and carried out further studies: parish priest at Les Sables d’Olonne (1992-1999); catechetical studies in Paris (1999-2000); diocesan catechetical service (2000-2005); episcopal vicar for catechesis and youth ministry (2005-2009); episcopal vicar of the central area (2009-2011); vicar general (2011-2017); diocesan administrator (2017-2018), after the resignation of Bishop Alain Castet; vicar general (2018-2019); parish priest-dean of Challans.
The Holy Father assigned him the titular see of Vaison.
