REYKJAVÍK – Coach Arnar Thor Vidarsson left the Icelandic football team after the first two matches of the qualification for the 2024 European Championship.
The 45-year-old coach was dismissed by the national association, stating in a statement on the website that such a decision was difficult but necessary. The federation has only just begun the search for a new coach.
Vidarsson has led the island nation’s national team since the end of 2020, but has failed to build on the previous successful period, the highlights of which were Iceland’s first European participation (2016) and debut at the World Cup (2018).
The Icelandic national team did not advance to the next two top tournaments and suffered a 0:3 defeat in Bosnia and Herzegovina last week when entering the new qualifying cycle. Vidarsson was not saved even by the next sovereign victory of 7:0 on the field of the outsider from Liechtenstein.
It is Iceland that will test Slovakia’s qualities next when they welcome our falcons on home soil in the third qualifying appearance of Group J.
