Italy has urgently raised Typhoon fighter jets to prevent a military plane flying over the Baltic Sea, the Ministry of Defense announced in Rome, as reported by Reuters, BTA writes .
The Italian fighter jets took off from the air base in the Lithuanian city of Šiauliai on orders from the NATO monitoring center in Germany.
The military department’s statement did not disclose details of the seized aircraft.
The Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are members of NATO and they strongly criticize Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine.
Italy this month led the alliance’s mission to protect the airspace over the Baltic Sea.
