“Of course, Liepāja is much more interesting and worth highlighting, but you will not inevitably – all of Latvia knows us as the” Wind City “and the composer has undoubtedly also contributed to it. Imants Kalnins, creating our anthem “In a city where the wind is born,” says Marek Albert, owner of Red Sun Buffet, a painting of his company ‘s anniversary gift to the composer.
“We wanted to emphasize the role of ImKas in the life of this city and create a lasting and modern addition to the urban environment with deeper significance. about material and technical support and video for artist Indulis Pelnēns about documenting the process of making graffiti, “Alberts tells about the implementation of the idea.
The place of the painting was not chosen at random. Sculptures of the images included in the text of the Liepāja anthem can be seen near Kūrmājas Avenue, thus this hay painting is an addition and an informative stop on the city’s tourism map.
Although he was born in Riga, ImKa, as he is often called, has given a lot to Liepāja. His song composed in 1973 with the words of Māris Čakls “In the City where the wind is born” has been the official anthem of Liepāja since 1999. From 1964, Imants Kalniņš worked as a lecturer at the Liepāja Emilis Melngailis Music Secondary School. After that, he started working at the Liepāja Musical Drama Theater (1967–1974) and in 1969 founded the Liepāja rock and roll ensemble 2xBBM (“Disciples of Bizbizmārītes and Bigbīta”), whose performance was banned after a concert in Ogre in the autumn of 1970.
We remind you that Imants Kalnins will celebrate his 80th birthday on May 26 this year.
