A motion of no confidence has been filed by club members Barcelona to the President Josep Maria Bartomeu. This motion was filed not solely to remove the president.
So far over 20,000 signatures have been collected for the Motion of No confidence against Bartomeu. About 16,500 have been verified by the club, which also confirms it meets the quorum.
This motion will initiate another series of processes, whether Bartomeu resigns or rejects and chooses the difficult path. If he refuses, the club will hold a referendum with a minimum of 66.6% of the votes required to force him out.
Actually, even without being expelled, Bartomeu would leave the presidency. He reportedly will not participate in the presidential election which is scheduled to be held in March.
So what is it that makes the Motion of No Confidence so urgent? With this motion, Bartomeu could be removed from office sooner and elections could be held even sooner, possibly in January.
But Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font revealed another important point. This motion is important to stop directors from making potentially damaging decisions.
“Bartomeu should have decided to hold the election because of the critical club situation. The most important thing about the Motion of No Confidence is not about speeding up the election, but stopping the current board from making decisions,” he told reporters. Zero Wave quoted SPORT.
Bartomeu has faced criticism for his way of leading Barcelona. He was caught in a corruption case, then allowed various internal disputes, to the team that did not win last season and the threat of losing Lionel Messi.
Messi threatened to leave in the transfer market last summer, but in the end chose to stay because he did not want to face the club that made his name in court. However, the risk of leaving is still there considering the contract expires in June 2021.
Font emphasized that one of his concerns if he became president was to defend Messi. He also regretted the transfer Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid, which is only worth 6 million euros in bonuses.
“It is important that the Barca-Messi association continues. I will not just give Suarez to Atletico, I will negotiate it,” continued Font.
